Question:

Does PeerLock run on Windows Server 2008 Core Installation?

Answer:

Yes. The Server Core installation does not include a traditional graphical user interface. In order to install PeerLock you will need to copy the plk20-uac.exe installation file onto the Core system and then launch it from the command line.

You will then need to launch the PeerLock interface in order to configure PeerLock. To do so, simply launch "C:\Program Files\PeerLock\PeerLock.exe" from the command line after the installation completes.

Known Limitations:
  • The Windows 2008 Server Core installation does not support HTML rendering or HTML help. Therefore you will not be able to view the PeerLock Help Manual directly on the server. You will need to copy the PeerLock.chm file to a non Server Core operating system to view it.
  • The Windows 2008 Server Core installation does not allow Folder or Explorer navigation. Therefore the following PeerLock interface options will not work:
File > Show Services
File > Shortcuts > Add to Desktop
File > Shortcuts > Add to Startup Folder
File > Shortcuts > Show Startup Folder
View > Folders > Create/View Folders
Known Issues:
  • In some instances PeerLock cannot be installed as a service from the user interface. When attempting to install the service PeerLock may throw the following error message:
Service “PeerLock Utility Software” failed to install with error: “System Error. Code: 1400. Invalid window handle”
The service can be installed and started from a script or command line. For example:
sc create PeerLockSVC binpath= 'C:\Program Files\PeerLock\PeerLock.exe' start= auto displayname= 'PeerLock Utility Software'
sc start PeerLockSVC
sc stop PeerLockSVC
sc remove PeerLockSVC
  • Currently there is an issue with the PeerLock v2.0.1.1 interface when running on the Core operating system. By default PeerLock will not display the Selection List and the Toolbar. Each time the PeerLock application is launched as an application you will need to do the following in order to view the Selection List and the Toolbar.
- Go to the View menu and click on the Toolbar menu item
- Repeat the above step to re-enable the Toolbar display
- Now the Selection List and Toolbar should be visible
Applies To:
PeerLock v2.0.1
